For those of you who don't know, Xtreme-gene is an excellent waterski/wakeboard site run in Spain, by Matt Southam, his wife Debbie and Andres. Although, Xtreme-gene clothing is so common around the ski circuit these days, it is a fashion in itself and I'd be surprised if you hadn't heard of it! The site is based at a huge, dammed, irrigation reservoir in the town of Almodovar Del Rio near Cordoba, 1-2 hours from Seville or Malaga airport. The ski club itself is set in a very picturesque position on the edge of the reservoir with log cabins, a bar, and sunbathing terrace. Visitors have the choice of staying on-site in the log cabins or in the town itself, which has a few hotels and a couple of flats for rent. The Waterskiing facilities are excellent, with expert coaching from Matt Southam. Two slalom courses offer a choice of situation depending on the wind direction (if any!). The wakeboarding facilities are also good with a vast water space available and many visits by Matt Crowhurst. Almodovar Del Rio itself is a lovely town. For me, the best thing is that very few people there speak English, which means the town is very "Spanish". Of course, Matt seems to have mastered the language pretty well, so can be used as an interpreter if necessary! It also means that there aren't many tourists around, just a few Spanish people that come to look at the magnificent restored castle high above the town. When a large group visit Xtreme-gene, I don't think Almodovar knows what's hit it! The selection of bars and restaurants are very good and welcome the extra custom, (even though I'm sure some groups have been just a little bit rowdy!) This is Matt and Debbie's third season and the success they've had is due to an awful lot of hard work and dedication. It is Matt and Debbie's personalities and hospitality that help make the club a success, just as much as the Waterskiing facilities and coaching.
