31st May 2001 British Waterski have today confirmed that the British Open will go ahead with a totally all new, one day format, with big money favouring the overall skier. Lets see Jaret and Patrice go head to head for the overall in the UK. Check out their web site for details

29th May 2001 We are still being inundated with mail about the Masters and the World Championships. I don't want to go on too much about them, so we have picked out 2 of the most interesting points to let you know the thoughts of some.

Firstly the current world overall Champion, Patrice Martin mailed us today with his reasons for not skiing at the Masters and secondly a member of the IWSF Executive Board on the World Championships.


28th May 2001 Entries are now being accepted for The 53rd running of the 2001 Catalina Ski Race held at Long Beach, California on Saturday July 28. Click for the Race entry form. The 2001 Catalina Ski Race.

28th May 2001 The Overton’s U.S. Open Water Ski & Wakeboard Championships. Straigt back into another major tournament this week end from Shreveport in Louisiana. The Open has a larger field than the Masters with 66 skiers and riders listed.

This includes Jamie Beauchesne winner of the open slalom title 2 times in the last 3 years and Andy Mapple, who has not had the best of luck in recent years but will be looking to add to his 8 titles.

28th May 2001 Hundreds of emails arrived this morning asking about rumours that the worlds in Spain have been cancelled. This appears to be true!! It has not been confirmed officially yet by IWSF, but im sure an announcement will be made very soon.

We don't want to comment on the reasons why, but with current trends we suspect it is financial. At this late date and with only 4 months to go, it is possibly too late to look at another country taking it on. We will bring you the full fact as soon as we know.


27th May 2001 The 42nd Masters tournament 2001 Finals. Emma Sheers equals her ski flying record with 66.6m. World domination continues with gold for Mapple in the slalom final. 283 ft (86.2m) for Freddy Krueger in mens ski flying. Toni Neville back on top in slalom with 3 @ 11.25m (38 off).

26th May 2001 The 42nd Masters tournament 2001. Once again, money seems to be the headlines in waterskiing!! Many of the top slalom skiers have not skied due to a dispute over prize money. This left only 2 slalom skiers through to the mens final, Andy Mapple scoring 2 @ 10.25m (41 off) and Jeff Rodgers.
Kristi Overton-Johnson leads the women with 3 @ 11m (38 off) and Toni Neville with 2.5.

Mens Ski flying nears closer to the 300 mark with Freddy Krueger 282 ft (85.8m) and Curtis Sheers 266ft (81.2m).

Russell Gay leads the mens tricks with 10940 ahead of Cory Pickos 10580.

23rd May 2001 Today IWSF President Andres Botero announced the cancellation of the 2001 World Cup series. This was an announcement that we all saw coming. We are not sure how it will affect the individual events, but we will let you know as soon as the federations confirm this.

22nd May 2001 The Sunset Cup. 11 750 points saw Nicolas Le Forestier 200 points ahead of Patrice Martin who took top spot in the slalom with 4 @ 10.75m. Brenda Baldwin scored 2@ 11.25m to lead the ladies slalom.

Elena Milakova finished off a good week end with first in ladies tricks and jump to strengthen her worlds overall push with 7320 points and 52.5m (172ft). This distance is only 20 cm off Toni Nevilles world jump record of 52.7m.

Christophe Duverger completed the European dominance with 63.3m (208ft) in the jump event.


21st May 2001 The World Overall Record falls again with Patrice Martin scoring 2741.75 points at the Sunset Cup. Patrice scored 4 buoys on the 10.75m line length, tricked 11550 points, and jumped 62.5m (205 ft). Full details soon.

18th May 2001 Two big events this week end, the first is at Jack Travers, the Sunset Cup. The second is at Tri-Lakes, the Tri-Lakes Record. Last year Nicolas Le Forestier matched the world trick record of Cory Pickos which they both still jointly hold on 11 920.

15th May 2001 It seems that more top event are doomed due to the lack of sponsors in our sport! Bob Corson, the IWSF World Cup Chairman said today,

"It has been very difficult for the organizers to raise the required money since the loss of Cafe de Colombia as our major sponsor. Every one wants to have the Cup happen at a high standard but that takes sponsorship. The organizers are trying as hard as the can to come up with a satisfactory plan the IWSF can agree to"

15th May 2001 Over the week end at Ski Paradise just outside Mulberry in Florida the Mothers day record took place. A similar show of skiers as they had at McCormicks. Another quality report from the event. Click for report.


13th May 2001 The 2001 Tournament Open World Waterski Championships will take place this year over the week of September 10th to the 16th at Castelldefels, Barcelona in Spain. Click on the logo to see the first official press release. Planet Water Ski will be providing regular update leading up to the event.

6th May 2001 The 2001 Big Air Challenge over the week end saw the worlds top ski flyers in action at Town Lake in Arizona. An injury to Jaret Llewellyn in practice left the door open for Scot Ellis to take the prize money with a final round jump of 263 feet (80.2m). This left Freddy Krueger in second with 259 feet (78.9m) and Ryan Fitts in third jumping 258 feet (78.6m).

Earlier in the week Jimmy Siemers suffered a broken arm which is expected to put him out for up to 6 weeks missing the Masters and the Open.


1st May 2001 McCormick International Record. With some of the top skiers staying away the slalom event was left to Brit Jodi Fisher scoring 2.5 @ 10.75m just holding off Patrice Martin with 2 buoys. Ladies slalom saw Regina Jaquess score 2.5 @ 11m ahead of Brenda Baldwin on 4 @ 12m.
